Organic holidays that you – and the planet – will love.
Our aim at Southwaite Green is to provide the setting for an eco-friendly holiday in the beautiful Lake District which will convince you that it is possible for everyone to live in greater harmony with the environment.
The cottages are spacious and comfortable and combine the traditional character of local Cumbrian farm buildings with the most modern energy efficient technology. Heating, lighting, furniture and fittings and appliances all contribute to the environmental friendliness of the design, including the eco-paints used throughout. A cottage handbook in each house explains the special features which will enable you to minimise your carbon footprint during your stay.
Southwaite Green is a ten acre site which has been professionally and sensitively landscaped to provide the perfect setting for your green holiday. Organic orchards and vegetable gardens will provide sustainable produce while a four acre area is regenerating as native woodland with a pond and wetland for wildlife. A willow coppice will provide a renewable resource for the future and wildflowers flourish in the hedgerows. You are free to explore the site to observe wildlife or simply to enjoy the rural serenity. If you prefer, a ‘guided tour’ will be available to help explain the evolution of the project and the vision of a lifestyle which is sustainable and enjoyable.
Visitors can take the opportunity to explore the Lake District and the traditional landscape of West Cumbria. There are splendid views of the western fells around Crummock and Buttermere and of the Skiddaw fells to the north, all of which offer a wide range of outdoor activities. A few miles to the west is the relatively unexplored coast with panoramic views of Scotland and the Irish Sea. We can provide you with information on visitor attractions, places to eat and drink, cultural events, sporting activities and agricultural shows and will be glad to share our enjoyment in living in such a beautiful part of Britain.
The area produces excellent food and drink and visitors can order organic and locally produced food for delivery to their cottage. If you are planning your visit around a particular event, or if you want to get an idea of local events, please sign up to our mailing list and we will keep you informed. In the future we will also be offering services which are complementary to our ethos, such as guided walks, adventure days, complementary therapies. Please let us know when you are booking if you have a special request and we will do our best to meet your needs.
