Cottages Introduction
Southwaite Green eco-cottages offer luxurious accommodation designed to a high level of ecological sustainability set amongst the splendour of the western fells of the Lake District.
The four eco-cottages have been built in a traditional manner using recycled or sustainable materials. Craftsmen from the local area have been employed throughout. You will find that each cottage is powered by green energy sources but there will be no loss of comfort. Solar panels heat the water while rooms have underfloor heating provided by ground source and air source heat pumps which tap into the warmth of the surrounding land and atmosphere. High levels of insulation conserve heat and you will be able to use electricity monitors to see how much energy you are using during your stay.
Each kitchen is equipped with an ‘A’ rated energy efficient cooker, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, toaster and eco kettle. A compost bin will encourage you to contribute kitchen waste to the organic gardens. There is a TV and DVD player in each lounge and one wind-up radio is provided in each cottage. All lighting is energy efficient and the property has its very own reed bed to deal with waste water.
The eco-friendly theme continues inside the cottages which have been decorated using environmentally-friendly paints and wood finishes. Local craftsmen have supplied some of the furnishings made from sustainable timber. These are supplemented by well-chosen pieces of furniture purchased locally. Beds are made up with organic sheets and duvet covers, and organic cotton towels – one bath sheet and one hand towel – are provided for each person. In certain cottages a set of twin beds which have been specially made by a local craftsman clip together into a super king size bed if preferred. Hair dryers, laundry and drying facilities and ironing equipment are provided on site. A cot and highchair are available on request.
Because of our commitment to an ethical lifestyle we provide all guests with organic Fair Trade tea and coffee and we will be donating 10% of all profits to projects which support sustainable development in poorer countries.
Please note that smoking is not permitted in any of the cottages.
One well behaved dog is allowed, but please remember that this is sheep country and you will need to keep the dog under control at all times. There is an extra charge of £15 per dog.
