Hidden Gem

Nestled in the peace and tranquillity of the Vale of Lorton lies idyllic Southwaite Green, this hidden gem of four eco cottages is set against a backdrop of spectacular Western Lakeland scenery. The picturesque setting appeals to everyone and to all interests.

The quieter Western Lakes of Loweswater, Buttermere, Crummock, Ennerdale and the winner of Britain’s best view Wastwater with rugged mountains, fells and sandy coastline offer an abundance of outdoor pursuits on the doorstep.

The bustling towns of Cockermouth (2 miles) home to Wordsworth House, (birthplace of Dorothy and William Wordsworth) and newly re opened Jennings Brewery whilst Keswick (9 miles) has the famous Theatre by the Lake on the shores of Derwentwater. Both offer a wealth of independent shops, inns, restaurants, museums, art galleries and parks.

Award Winning

For those who want to capture the peaceful ambience that is Southwaite Green, the four award winning cottages sit on the Paddle Beck boundary of the National Park (now an UNESCO World Heritage Site) which flows through the 10 acres of organically maintained native woodland, wildflower meadow, orchards, arboretum and pond.

It is a haven for wildlife including foxes, badgers, roe deer, hares, red squirrels, buzzards, barn owl family, heron and kingfisher which can be observed in the 10 acre grounds.

The owner has paid great attention to detail which is a testament to the highly acclaimed Gold Award from the Green Tourism Scheme to ensure that the cottages have a low carbon footprint and that your stay is both enjoyable and memorably different.

Eco-Living

Southwaite Green cottages were constructed in 2007 to a very high standard by the owner who lives in the grounds. The development built on traditional Lake District lines combine spacious comfort and style with environmental technologies and give a unique experience demonstrating that sustainability and luxury can be combined.

Local craftsmen using local timber and stone from the site and recycling original beams from the barns have retained the traditional character. The cottages have used green design and technologies, ground and air source heat pumps power underfloor heating beneath the slate and oak floors. Solar panels generate both electricity and hot water whilst a reed bed  deals with waste water. Each cottage has been furnished with organic wool mattresses, organic bedding, towels, handmade furniture from sustainable sources and decorated using eco friendly paint.
